History of android market

Android Market announced on August 28, 2008 and the user can use it starting on October 22, 2008. Priced application support has been added to users in the U.S. and developers in the U.S. and the UK in mid February 2009. Users in the UK can buy a purchased application began on March 13, 2009. According to Cole Brodman, Chief Technical Officer of T - Mobile, on March 17, 2009, there were about 2,300 applications available for download from the Android Market.

In December 2009, there were more than 20,000 applications available for download on Android Market. In August 2010, there were over 80,000 applications available for download on Android Market, with more than 1 billion downloads. The last few months ( in 2010 ) showed an increasing growth rate and in May 2010 exceeded 10,000 applications per month extra. On October 25, 2010, the official twitter account AndroidDev announced that the number of applications in the Android Market has surpassed 100,000 applications.

According to Distimo, in July 2010, the Android Market has the highest percentage of free apps, with more than 57 % free application that can be downloaded, double that of Apple Inc. App Store, where only 28 % of applications for free. Other competitors, like Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World has 26 %, and Windows Marketplace only has 22 %.
