Community Based Firmware

There is a community of open- source enthusiasts who build and share with a number of Android -based firmware customization and additional features, like support for FLAC lossless audio and the ability to store applications that are downloaded on a microSD card.

This usually involves rooting the device. Rooting allows users root access to the operating system, giving more control over their environment variables. To use the custom firmware, the bootloader, the device must be unlocked. Rooting itself does not allow for flashing firmware is customizable. The modified firmware allows users to use the old phone applications that are only available on new releases.

Firmware package is updated regularly, incorporating elements of the functions of Android that has not been officially released in a carrier - sanctioned firmware, and tend to have fewer limitations. CyanogenMod and VillainROM are two examples of the firmware.
