Android device can run applications built by third-party developers that are distributed through the Android Market or some other application stores. Once they sign up, developers can quickly make their applications available on Android Market, without the difficult approval process. Therefore, Android device might be more susceptible to malware or virus infection.
When the application is installed, Android displays all permissions ( licenses ) are required. At that time, the user can decide whether to install the application or not. Users can decide not to install the application if the requirements are displayed seems excessive or unnecessary. For example a game will need to enable vibration, but does not need to read the message or access the phone book.
Application permissions include things like:
• Accessing the Internet
• Make phone calls
• Sending SMS messages
• Reads and writes to memory card
• Accessing data on the user's address book
Although there are only a few malware attacks, security software company has developed applications to ensure the security of Android devices. Smobile Systems claims that 20 % of applications in the Android Market could be used for malicious purposes. They also stated that 5 % of applications can make phone calls without user intervention. The Company does not claim that applications on Android Market are dangerous, just that there are several possibilities.
